Units of Conversion: Cubic (Volume) Measure - Problem 1
Basic to the understanding of unit conversion is the understanding of
equivalence, the understanding of the multiplicative identity of 1, and how
the two are related. For a review of these concepts, click on

You will also need to multiply and reduce fractions. If you have forgotten
how to manipulate fractions, visit

Review the following table of Standard Units of Conversion to see if you can
create fractions that have a value of 1. You can click to examples following
each table.
Cubic Measure
Problem 1:Convert 25,000 cubic feet to cubic yards.
Solution:
Short Solution:
- From the above table, you can see that there is a
link between cubic
feet and cubic yard: 27 cubic feet is equivalent to one cubic yard.
-
25,000 cubic feet can be written as
-
Multiply the above fraction by 1 in the form
- Multiply the two fractions.
-
Cancel the cubic feet in the above fraction and simply.
Long Solution:
- According to the linear conversion table, 1
yard is equivalent to 3
feet.
-
Write 25,000 cubic feet as 25,000 x 1 foot x 1 foot x 1 foot.
- Now write the above as 25,000 x 1 foot x 1 x 1 foot x 1 x 1 foot x 1, where
the 1 is
written in the equivalent form
to obtain
-
Rewrite the expression again as
-
Multiply the fractions.
-
Rewrite as several fractions where some of the fractions have a value of 1.
