Units of Conversion: Cubic (Volume) Measure - Problem 1

Basic to the understanding of unit conversion is the understanding of equivalence, the understanding of the multiplicative identity of 1, and how the two are related. For a review of these concepts, click on Review.

Review the following table of Standard Units of Conversion to see if you can create fractions that have a value of 1. You can click to examples following each table.

Cubic Measure

Problem 1:Convert 25,000 cubic feet to cubic yards.

Solution:

Short Solution:

• From the above table, you can see that there is a link between cubic feet and cubic yard: 27 cubic feet is equivalent to one cubic yard.
• 25,000 cubic feet can be written as

  

• Multiply the above fraction by 1 in the form

  

• Multiply the two fractions.

  

• Cancel the cubic feet in the above fraction and simply.

  

Long Solution:

• According to the linear conversion table, 1 yard is equivalent to 3 feet.
• Write 25,000 cubic feet as 25,000 x 1 foot x 1 foot x 1 foot.
• Now write the above as 25,000 x 1 foot x 1 x 1 foot x 1 x 1 foot x 1, where the 1 is written in the equivalent form

• Rewrite the expression again as

  

• Multiply the fractions.

  

• Rewrite as several fractions where some of the fractions have a value of 1.
